• Local authorities spend around £99 billion per annum

  Social security (25%)
  National health (16%)

• The 2002 spending review emphasised:
  
  Education - rising from 5.1% of GDP to 5.6%
  Health - rising from 7.7% of GDP to 9.4%
  Transport - 8.4% increase in expenditure focused on rail and road transport
  Housing - £1.3b p.a. extra by 2005/6
  Crime - £1.5b p.a. extra by 2005/5
  Defence - 1.2% p.a. increase in real terms
  International Aid - from 0.32% of GDP to 0.4%
  
  
• Annual public expenditure per head on services:
  
  In England was £4529
  In Scotland was £5558
  In Wales was £5302
  In Northern Ireland was £6424

• The defence budget in 2003/4 is £30.9 billion.
  
  In terms of service personnel employed by the Armed Forces there are
